The one night a long time ago when everything seemed good

John Trustin

The three of us brought dinner home

from the Greek diner

and watched a movie we all enjoyed.

They didn’t have school the next day;

I didn’t have work

and the weather forecast was mild.

I kissed the kids goodnight

and they were both asleep

in a matter of minutes;

then I called my sweetie,

not knowing yet

the things she was and wasn’t capable of.

We talked a while,

said our I Love Yous

and then I sat down

and wrote a marvelous poem

that I believed, at the time,

to be truth

as my cat balanced on her haunches

then jumped off the table

and across the universe.
