Acquired Imperfection

R. Gerry Fabian

The doctor examines

the top of my right toe

where I dropped the window

air conditioner on it.

It is puffed red swollen.

Then he notices the slender

black splinter in the calloused

pad below.

“I can take that out for you

if you’d like.” He offers.

The splinter has been there

since I was eleven years old.

I got it walking barefoot

in the hay loft.

Despite my grandmother’s

flame sterilized sewing needle’s

stabbing, poking and gouging,

she couldn’t remove it.

It has become a constant

in my otherwise unbalanced life –

a metaphysical divining rod.

I decline.
